Blast Protection: Vehicles
IED’s have been responsible for over 60% of Coalition deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan. In response to the need to better protect military vehicles from IED’s CMI has worked with the military and private industry to develop two underbody blast attenuation systems, an aluminum corrugated MicroTrussTM and stainless steel X–core MicroTruss system. Testing has shown that a light weight per square foot aluminum corrugated MicroTrussTM armor panel absorbs at least 1/3 of the blast energy. In addition, another almost as light per square foot stainless steel X–core MicroTruss armor panel absorbed at least 1/4 of the same level blast energy. CMI’s vehicular armor systems achieve this blast attenuation in two ways, energy absorption through plastic deformation and delay in the time of arrival of the blast wave
